PMEA is dedicated to the promotion of music development of students all over Pennsylvania, sponsoring various events including concert bands, orchestra and jazz ensembles on the county, district, regional, and state levels. South Allegheny is part of PMEA Region 1, District 1.

The "Major League" of marching bands. The primary purpose of a DCI corps is to provide a life changing experience for youth through the art of marching music performance. But you don't have to be in a drum corps to experience the excitement! DCI's competitive summer tour stops in Pittsburgh every year, and is truly a must see (and hear) event.

WGI hosts regional and national competitions for color guard and indoor percussion ensembles. Like DCI, Winter Guard International's Color Guard tour also makes a stop in Pittsburgh.

Virginia Tech's Department of Music has put together this great resource, which is much more like an encyclopedia than a dictionary. The site defines and explains tempo markings, musical genres, instruments, and virtually any musical term you might run into.

Free online lessons and trainers for beginners to advanced musicians about rhythm, key signatures, chords, triads, intervals, scales, etc. Also has a few ear training lessons.

Vic Firth's website includes a list and recordings of all 40 of the Percussive Arts Society's Essential Snare Drum Rudiments and how to play them, as well as many video lessons on drumset, marching snare and keyboard percussion.

This site is dedicated to basic information about classical music, and includes overviews of different eras of music up to the 20th century, short biographies of composers, and its own music dictionary.
