Parent & Student Handbook
Grading
For grading purposes, band students are grouped into two separate entities:
- The Band - those students who play an instrument and are in the Band for the entire year. That is, students who participate in the Marching Band (but not necessarily play an instrument in the marching band, i.e. majorettes or color guard) and play and instrument in the Concert Band. These students who take Band for the entire year receive a full credit for their participation in Band.
- The Band Front - those students who do not play an instrument and participate in the color guard or majorettes during the Marching Band season only (first semester).
Students in the Band receive a grade every nine weeks. The grade the student receives is viewed as equal to a grade in any other full credit class and is therefore factored into their QPA and class rank, etc.
Students in the Band Front (who are not also in the Concert Band), receive a grade for the first nine weeks only.
Attendance of all Band and Band Front students is required at all performances. This statement, although simple, is our most fundamental of working principles and is strictly administered.
The philosophy is that the High School Band is performance oriented and that we are only as strong as our weakest link. We cannot perform our most effective without all members in attendance.
The student's grade for a particular nine weeks period will be directly linked to his/her attendance at Band rehearsals and performances.
The Band student's grade is based on several factors:
- attendance at all rehearsals and performances
- student performance level of both music and drill during marching season (both music and drill must be memorized by the first football game)
- playing maintenance of their band instrument
- student appearance and maintenance of marching uniform (during marching season)
- performance level of concert music (during concert season)
- observance and compliance of the rules, regulations and policies of the band, and student attitude/cooperation
The Band Front student's grade is based on several factors:
- attendance at all rehearsals and performances
- student performance level of their drill
- student proficiency level with their equipment (flag, baton, etc.)
- student appearance and maintenance of marching uniform and equipment
- observance and compliance of the rules, regulations, policies of the band, and student attitude/cooperation
Since one of the main objectives of band is to teach responsibility and cooperation a students grade will be significantly lowered (up to a failing grade) if they do not meet their responsibilities.
